Travel in Europe | Travel Tips on Saving Money

Updated: May 1, 2020

Here are some tips on how to save money when you are travelling in Europe:

1) Plan early (everyone knows this but it does not make sense if we exclude this tip)

Things can get much more intense and expensive when you plan late. Why not plan early when you can? Make good use of the early-bird tickets which are available for many tourist attractions in Europe, that will save you a lot when summed up.
Book your accommodation and air tickets early. Make use of the price comparing websites (simply search "air ticket/hotels comparison site"in your desired search engines) which help you to get the cheaper air tickets & accommodations.
Moreover, you get much more options when you book in advance! Although there might be a few cheap accommodation available at last minute (like a day ahead), the location of the accommodation may not be the best. The cheaper accommodation which located further away from the city may not save you a lot because the transportation fee may cost more so.. plan ahead and book early to save you money!
2) Avoid taxis, use public transport
It is always cheaper to use public transportation than taxis. Don't worry if you at not familiar with the public transport system at your visiting places because you can use google maps which tells you which public transport to take. The locations and routes were quite updated In Europe when we were there at the year of 2019.
It is better to overestimate the travel duration suggested in google maps because you might get distracted by unexpected events (example, buses/trains/tubes arrived a bit later) which might delay the time for you to reach the destination.

3)Choose budget airline
Travelling during festive/pick seasons could cost a lot but we could travel in those seasons with lower cost by using budget airlines. Most budget airlines serves meal in the plan with a higher cost so in order to avoid spending on expensive airplane meals, why not bring your own! pack some snacks or sandwiches.wraps that is easy to carry. with you to the plane.

4) Pack luggage wisely

If you are using budget airline, buying baggage can cost a lot so why not prevent spending unnecessary money when you can pack wisely? Be smart and pack essentials only!

Remember to find out the free baggage allowance for hand carries of your airline and prevent

The best thing of not having checked luggage means you can save time for dropping and collecting your bags/luggage!

5) Compare the price on purchasing tansporation packages or separately
You might be thinking of purchasing transportation packages such as Eurail/Interrail that many people have recommended it. However, we think Eurail/Interrail is more expensive compared to buying tickets early and separately unless you will be using these transportation a lot and exceeds the amount in a day. For instance, If you purchase 10 days in 2 months travel packages in Eurail, it allows you to choose any 10 day you will be traveling. In that 10 days, you can use as many trains as you like which is flexible and convenient. However, please be reminded that this does not include local countries public transportation and some trains is not included with seat reservation fees so you will need to check whether reservation is needed. If needed, extra fees are required. Therefore, it is crucial to compare both plans and come out with a better options for your trip!
6) Accommodation
Most people think that Airbnb is always cheaper than hotel, in most occasion yes but hotels can be cheaper than Airbnb sometimes, especially when you plan early and make use of the price comparing sites. Thus, when searching for accommodation, it is better if you compare all the prices and locations, and choose the best accommodation that suits you. It is important to bear in mind that most sites use USD as the currency, be sure to change the currency or else you might accidentally book an accommodation that seems cheap when you thought the price is stated in the currency of your country but the it is actually in USD! (which in most cases can be much more expensive than you think)

7)Bring your student ID (if you are a student)
Many places gives discounts to students in Europe but they will always ask you to present you student ID. You will not have the privileged to enjoy the discount if you don't have your student ID with you, even if you are a student so remember to bring your student card with you! Check out the websites of the places that you want to visit, student price/discounts will be stated in their website if they provide student discounts.
